Welcome to Read Music Free, a web site dedicated to providing 100% free learning games and resources to music students of all ages.
The free online games you find on this site were written because I found it very difficult, as a beginner music student, to find enough
sheet music at my comprehension level to help me develop sight-reading abilities. This turns out to be a common complaint.
In 1992, two hundred twenty one nationally certified teachers of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) responded to a poll which asked
them to rate the importance of sight-reading as a skill. Thirteen percent replied that it was the most important pianistic skill at the piano,
73 percent rated it highly important and the remainder rated it fairly important, while no one rated it as somewhat important or insignificant.
Interestingly, only 7% of them said they address it systematically. Reasons cited were a lack of knowledge of how to teach it, inadequacy of the training materials they use, and deficiency in their own sight-reading skills. Teachers also often emphasize rehearsed reading and repertoire building for successful recitals and auditions to the detriment of sight-reading and other functional skills (Source: Hardy).
This site is and will remain free for one simple reason: because music makes the world a better place. We hope you find it useful. Please send us your success stories and words of encouragement!
